One of the most effective ways to ensure your application or system meets users requirements is to use rapid prototyping.
I work with users (or staff in the case of internal business systems) to determine their requirements from the system or application. Using tools such as Balsamiq Mockups, Axure RP and Dreamweaver I create mockups of website/application screens and work through any functional or usability issues with the users. This can be very simple screenshots through to a fully functional prototype of the website or application.
By finding and fixing workflow and usability defects early in the development process, there are significant savings to be made in development projects. Users are also more supportive of systems where they have had input and have guided the development and this is crucial to the success of any development project.
